She graduated with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 2011 and a PhD in Pharmacology and Toxicology in 2012, followed by a Residency in Laboratory Animal and Primate Medicine and a post-doctoral position in Cardio-thoracic Surgery and Regenerative Medicine, all at UC Davis. She also completed a fellowship in Clinical Pharmacology through the University of Utah. Her research has been broadly in the areas of computer vision, machine learning and deep learning, with application to AI-assistance in healthcare. She received her PhD from Stanford in 2018, where she was a member of the Artificial Intelligence Lab. During her PhD, she was the lead graduate student in the Stanford Partnership in AI-Assisted Care (PAC), a collaboration between the Stanford School of Engineering and School of Medicine. Serena was also co-instructor of Stanford's Convolutional Neural Networks for Visual Recognition course in 2017 and 2018, and she spent time at Facebook AI Research in 2016 and Google Cloud AI in 2017. For her IB personal project , Julianna designed and built two remote control cars. While she finds joy in participating with her high school Dance Team, she also seeks to raise consciousness about sex trafficking among young women through an organization called Street Team.
